Ok so I finally plucked up the courage (read: had a few glasses of last year's homemade elderflower champagne), plugged in the mic and managed to get 2 hours of video footage done. Now it wasn't perfect and I had a few hours messing about getting the sound of the glass hitting the table and such not to show but overall I'm fairly pleased with it. What's more important is that I actually enjoyed it and I don't cringe when I hear my voice anymore, since I listened to it for 2 or 3 hours last night during editing.
However, I really didn't expect it to take so long to encode and upload to YouTube. Really it's taking around 2 hours a video. 1 hour for encoding and about an hour to upload it all. Maybe just my shoddy internet connection to be honest but that's about 24 hours to sort out 8 videos, which isn't fantastic. Maybe now I can understand the thought processes behind releasing one video a day.
Anyhow, negativity cast aside like a well sucked lolly stick, I'm really pleased to have got over my mic-shyness. Just need to keep going I guess and hope that here and there some lost soul in the land of YouTube decides to come along for the journey.

Rest in Peace Elisabeth Sladen
Just heard on a tweet from Stephen Fry that Elisabeth Sladen passed away last night. Feeling vaguely tearful about it and I thought I might commit a few words.
Ok, so I'm a pretty big Doctor Who fan. I don't actually remember her as Sarah Jane Smith in the original span of episodes but I certainly saw them as I grew up in repeats and things like that. Elisabeth's reprisal of the role in School Reunion was one of the highlights of the series for me and I ended up watching along to The Sarah Jane Adventures too because of it (and secretly enjoying every moment as I watched, headphones on at 3am).
For a woman who battled Daleks, fought Cybermen and even faced the Loch Ness Monster beside The Doctor it seems unfair somehow to have fallen in her fight against Cancer. My sincerest condolences go out to her friends and family.

Lights, Camera, Action... Oh hang on ... I have to SPEAK!?!
I am human. I have a weakness. After many many years of being a gobby shit and being opinionated on many subjects, it would appear that Microphones are my nemesis. Yes folks, you heard (or in this case you didn't hear me because that too would involve a microphone *cringe*) me, I have a nemesis and it's grey and pointed at my face waiting for me to speak. It's infinitely patient too, waiting, watching, waiting...
Who would have guessed that after so much work sorting intros, working on video production methods and finding out what on Earth I'm doing in general, I can't seem to gather the balls to speak into a microphone! Oh cruel, cruel fate...
Seriously though I'm going to have to take a couple of days speaking to and getting used to speaking to my Microphone. I need to change from a Phonophobe to a Phonophile.
I guess it's just a bit like being pee shy... you just have to wait until you get desperate or drunk enough not to care...

Worth Documenting?
I'm basically starting out trying to be a YouTube video producer. Been thinking about it for a while and am currently trying to get stuff sorted and since everyone has a related twitter/blog/facebook account, I signed up for one.
Since I started, I've actually been thinking that maybe this might be a lot more interesting if I actually use the blog to talk about experiences and hurdles that I've had in going through the process. Just in case other people were thinking "Hey I might give that a go". I'm sure I'll not remember stuff in 3 months time so it might be nice to put down information as I go and keep a little bit of a record of the process.

The journey of a thousand miles...
starts with a bloody good long think about whether you really want to travel a thousand miles.
So yeah. Decided a few weeks ago to give this whole youtube malarkey a go. Have been into games for a very long time and I'm fairly confident I can do this stuff and add a little bit of humour into it. Just depends whether people actually like it or whether I'm just dipping my toes into a pool that's already overcrowded with fish of all sizes.
Anyhow... I've pretty much got all my stuff sorted out. Got all the accounts sorted, got all the vids and software sorted and running. Spent a week listening to my own voice so I don't make myself cringe when I hear it played back... Just need to do some vids now.
Will be beginning with some Secret of Mana on the SNES and following that with Zelda: a Link to the Past. They're both fun games that I know well and can play blindfolded so it's a good start for me. I am also planning on doing some warcraft videos and I'll probably drop some Minecraft and Magicka into the mix just to keep things varied.
